Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt was on in the evening shift as nurse so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use the arts as a way of expression. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house that belonged to a member of jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
